Methodology

How It Works

Multiples-based valuation benchmarks your company against public companies in the same sector. The math is direct: EV ≈ annual EBITDA × the segment's EV/EBITDA multiple, or EV ≈ annual revenue × the EV/Revenue multiple.

We show the range between the segment's mean (which excludes companies flagged as outliers in our report) and its median (which considers every measurable company). Public-company multiples are typically adjusted for private businesses to reflect size, liquidity and specific risk — treat this result as a starting point, not an opinion of value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiples Valuation, Explained

Which multiple should I use: EBITDA or revenue?

The EBITDA multiple is the M&A standard when a company generates stable operating profit, because it captures profitability. The revenue multiple is used when margins do not yet reflect the potential of the business, for example in fast-growing companies or during heavy investment cycles.

Is the result what a buyer would pay for my company?

No. The result is an estimated Enterprise Value (EV) based on comparables. Net debt is subtracted to arrive at equity value, and the final price in a transaction depends on quality of earnings, growth, customer concentration and, above all, a well-run competitive process.

Where do the multiples come from?

From the global comparable public company tables in Seale & Associates' quarterly industry reports, built with Capital IQ data. Each segment shows the mean and the median of the most recent published quarter (as of Mar. 31 and Jun. 30, 2026).

Why is the range so wide in some segments?

Because the report's mean excludes outlier companies while the median considers every measurable company. In segments with extreme valuations, such as electric vehicles, that difference is large. Public-company multiples also tend to be adjusted downward for private companies due to size and liquidity.

How often are the multiples updated?

Every quarter, with each new Seale & Associates industry report. This page shows the cut-off date for each segment.
